Ryan Lee
Ryan Lee is a commercial and editorial portrait photographer from Hong Kong who explores the music industry through his work. Ryan is a passionate musician himself which allows him to work with themes and ideas from a musician’s perspective, and brings his own understanding of musical representation to his work. The themes that he explores include notions of identity, persona and the style of the musicians through photography. Here, Ryan intends to use controlled lighting for dramatic effect which is later edited in post production to create the musician’s aesthetic. Ryan shoots both in the studio and on location to explore these themes, using techniques such as experimenting with coloured light, rim lighting, shaping light and creating distressed-looking imagery.
Ryan’s recent work draws on the local music scene in Plymouth, collaborating with local artists to generate moodboards and undertaking test shoots. These are used to produce promotional material for advertisement of their upcoming shows or to document their performances for use on social media, in music publications, or on posters. This close working relationship with the artists enables their input into how they are represented and ensures client satisfaction.
